Dead world coming to the big sreen?

‘Deadworld’ Adaptation Adds ‘Watchmen’ & ‘X-Men 2’ Screenwriter David Hayter

Back in February, we revealed that “Coraline” producer Bill Mechanic had snatched up the rights to “Deadworld,” a comic book series that focuses on a zombie apocalypse’s aftermath — and like the titular dead flesh-eaters, this story is rising again.

Variety announced today that Mechanic will be joined in his “Deadworld” efforts by Dark Hero Studios’ David Hayter and Benedict Carver. The film is looking to begin production in 2010.

According to Variety, the story of “Deadworld” picks up four months after an event in which zombies have overtaken the planet, with humans few and far between. The protagonist is a character called “King Zombie, a Harley-riding corpse who holds a grudge against the survivors who made him an outcast.”

Hayter, of course, is the screenwriter behind several comic book projects, most notably “X2: X-Men United” and Zack Snyder’s adaptation of “Watchmen.” (Did’ja also know he’s the voice of Solid Snake in “Metal Gear Solid”?) He describes “Deadworld” as contingent on “cool, frightening but not necessarily gory creatures.”

If you want to learn more about “Deadworld,” head on over to the official websitefor the comic book series. It describes “Deadworld” as a new type of zombie story, depicting “intelligent zombies with a goal and a mission,” while focusing on humanity’s ever-increasing realization that they’re facing certain extinction.

Interestingly, the website also mentions that “Deadworld” was previously optioned for film by George Clooney and Robert Lawrence’s Maysville Pictures with distribution from Warner Bros. Even if Clooney’s not involved in this original deal, we’d like to put our vote in now to have the actor suit up as King Zombie. C’mon guys, it’s been a long time since “Batman and Robin“!

Zombie Nazi’s Film Debut

By Alex Suskind

Published June 10, 2009, issue of June 19, 2009.

If we’ve learned anything about scary movies, it’s that the living dead are not to be taken lightly. What could be worse than a crowd of zombies — foaming at the mouth and oozing with blood — chasing after you in the dark night? Norwegian director Tommy Wirkola has found the answer in his new horror spoof, “Dead Snow.” The film is about a group of friends who are hunted not by your traditional brain-crazed zombies, but rather by Nazi zombies, while stranded in the snow-covered mountains of Northern Norway.

“It was an idea of, how can we make zombies even more evil? Nazi zombies, of course,” Wirkola told The Shmooze. “There has never been in film history, as we can remember, a zombie film in the snow. Something with the blood in the snow and the Nazi uniforms… it gives [the movie] good images.”

The story begins with a group of college students who take an Easter holiday trip to the mountains. They soon learn from a creepy yet knowledgeable elder that the land was once traversed by members of the Third Reich, who stole gold and silver from the local population. As legend has it, the locals did not take too kindly to this. Armed with axes, knives and spades, the townspeople chased and trapped the platoon in the mountains, where the German soldiers froze to death. When the students stumble upon the long-lost stolen gold, the Nazi zombies, who will kill anyone who stands between them and their fortune, climb out of their icy graves to terrorize the helpless young travelers.

“Normal zombies are into just flesh and blood and brains. But these zombies are just killing machines,” Wirkola said.

The film, which opens June 19 in New York City and June 26 in Los Angeles, takes the classic zombie genre to a whole new level.

The Zombie movie onslaught doesn’t seem to abating at all, with reel after reel of the living dead set to unspool in the coming months. There’s white zombies, black zombies, Spanish zombies, yellow zombies, there’s hot zombies, cold zombies, there’s wet zombies, there’s smelly zombies… and whatever else Mr. Marin said about lady parts in From Dusk Til Dawn. After the break you can catch updates on Zombieland,Deader CountryDead SnowI Spit on Your Rave and more.

Zombieland stars Woody Harrelson and Emma Stone, and is set to feature cameosfrom Bill Murray and Amber Heard as members of the walking dead. According toShock Till You Drop the first promo trailer for the film, which may yet just be a teaser, will be attached to Year One next week. Woo hoo!

The Book of Zombie, not to be confused with the The Book of Eli, is a no-budget Mormon zombie picture. Bloody Disgusting were quite impressed with what they saw at the film’s official site. Myself, I think the word would be ‘intrigued’ more than ‘impressed’. Here’s the film’s trailer:

The release pattern for Dead Snow has been released via Fangoria. After hitting New York (19th June) and LA (26th June) in the original Norwegian with subtitles, the film will be released via IFC VOD in a dubbed version. Disgraceful. The DVD will contain both versions, so why can’t the VOD? Do you know how long it has been since I’ve seen a dubbed film? Over three quarters of my life, that’s how long. And I fully intend to never see another.

Horror-Movies.ca have some new stills from Deader Country. They describe one “hybrid” creature in the film as being “half man, half alien and ALL zombie”. Here’s one image, to set the expectation level:

A press release on behalf of the zombie wranglers behind I Spit on Your Rave is inviting all and sundry to join the film as extras and, very probably, earn a place in The Guinness Book of Records. Here’s the deal:

Audience participation will be taken to a whole new level at this year’s Big Chill festival as fields full of revellers get a Zombie makeover – and are transported to the year 2018 where mankind is extinct after a virus is released at the 2012 Olympics. Zombies have taken over the world but, like their human ancestors, they are partial to a summer party…

Note that this is a UK event. The zombiemob takes place on August 6th, after which “a short clip of the main scene will then be shown at the end of the festival before being released online, giving people the chance to see whether they made it to the silver screen, or the cutting room floor.”

If you’re interested, there’s an official Big Chill page to keep tabs on. While make-up and costume will be available on location the festival is appealing for as many people to arrive in costume as possible, with filming beginning the moment people arrive at the box office, and continuing all over the site through the weekend.

And to close out this first (and last?) ever /Film Zombie Roundup, here’s the early promo poster for I Spit on Your Rave:

Star in a zombie movie!

SOURCE: BY HANNAH WOOD ON JUNE 8, 2009 1:16 PM IN BIG CHILL

Could it be said that you've ever found yourself at a festival wandering aimlessly towards some preordained destination, grunting, mumbling and perfecting a dead-eyed stare?

Surely not?

But if, like me and my eager mates, you've a lifelong ambition to star in a zombie movie I've just found you another reason to attend The Big Chillthis summer.

Scene from Shaun of the Dead - think you're up to it?

Filming for post-apocalyptic mockumentary 'I Spit On Your Rave' (feel it, baby) is gonna be combined with a World Record attempt at the generally civilised fest, and they want YOU to take part.

Warp Films and Film4 are organising the world's biggest mass participation zombie walk on Thursday, August 6.

A field full of happy festivalites will get a zombie makeover to transport them to the year 2018, a time when mankind is extinct after a virus released at the 2012 Olympics wipes out humans as we know them and makes way for party-partial zombies.

Vats of fake blood and your best contorted expressions will be employed so director Chris Boyle can capture 'the most amount of zombies on camera'.

Festivalites will then get a sneak preview of the scene when it's screened to crowds at the end of the festival.

This site www.ispitonyourrave.com, telling you how to get involved, was supposed to go live today but isn't working yet. Keep your eyes peeled.

If stumbling around with your arms outstretched pretending to be the undead isn't enough to get you to the Big Chill this line-up, including Mr Scruff, Basement Jaxx, Spiritualised and, wait for it, Zombie Zombie (!) , might be?

Zombies at the beach?

Sexy, scary surfers tonight at Zombie Beach Party

By Molly Freedenberg

hhrldgcreepshow_patrickmccarthy_0609.jpg
The Living Dead Girls were sexy and scary at Hubba Hubba's Creepshow Peepshow last year. Photo by Patrick McCarthy.

Here's the setting: If Annette came back from the dead and ate Frankie's brains. If Gidget gorged on Moon Dog's entrails before catching a sweet wave. If Brian Wilson were not just King of the Beach Boys but King of the Undead. If the Australian altrock band were called Dead Can Surf. If all you needed for a day at Baker was a big towel, a good book, and a large giblet smoothie...

Yup. It's Zombie Beach Party. And it's gonna be awesome.

I don't only say that because I'm going to be in it. In fact, the new dance my Richard Cheese-inspired troupe, the Cheese Puffs, will debut on Friday has plenty of potential to go horribly wrong - in the form of 7 bounce-able, lose-able, unpredictable beach balls (though, to be fair, they'll be bounced or lost or -- gasp! -- even kept by 7 adorable showgirls).

No, it's because so much of the evening has the potential to go horribly, grotesquely, disgustingly right.

The event at DNA is co-hosted by Hubba Hubba Revue -- the wacky variety/burlesque production team that brings vaudeville-style antics to Oakland's Uptown every Monday, to DNA Lounge at least every month, and, increasingly, to other events around town (if it's bawdy, sexy, well-organized, and funny, it's probably Hubba Hubba's doing) -- and the Living Dead Girlz -- the troupe of sexy undead dancers whose (actual dance) choreography is matched only by their zombie-licious costumery and storylines.

Between Kingfish and Eddie's banter and the LDG's guaranteed sexiness, you might not even need another reason to go. But just in case, keep in mind the rest of the show will feature burlesque favorites like Sparkly Devil (who performed at last year's Best of the Bay party), Honey Lawless, and Dottie Lux, all doing their nearly-naked best to honor surf and zombie movies of yore.

Zombies on campus?

by Tristan Hiegler
Friday, June 05, 2009
Western freshman Matt Weiser dropped his bag and started running when he saw them. He had weapons in each hand as he raced for the nearest building, but he knew they could not stop that most horrendous of enemies—the zombie.

Only these zombies were Western students wearing yellow headbands, and Weiser’s “weapons” were a Nerf blaster and a balled-up sock, either of which he could hit a zombie player with to stun them for 15 minutes.

Weiser and his supposedly-undead-opponents are players in Humans vs. Zombies (HvZ), a game of tag where players start off as human and are turned into zombies by the other team. The human players wear yellow arm bands while the zombie players don yellow headbands. Weiser, the game coordinator for HvZ on campus, said the game allows students to meet each other and form strategies on how to evade or track down the other team.  The game lasted from 6 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, to 9 p.m. Sunday, May 31, with nearly 90 Western students participating.

“This is definitely a very social game,” Weiser said.

Western freshman Rachel Petit said she enjoys the game because of the bonds players forge, even while trying to throw socks at each other.

“We all get to meet each other, and no matter what side you’re on it’s all fun and games,” she said.

Petit is also one of the six moderators for the game. She said there has not been much rule breaking during the course of the game.

Weiser said the zombies could “infect” human players with a firm one-handed tag on the torso. He said zombies could not use Nerf blasters or other ranged weapons, but they had to rely on coordinated ambushes to get the better of the human players.

“Part of the time, the group that is more organized [is] the zombies,” Weiser said.

He said the zombie players learn the human players’ schedules and wait to pounce on them as they are leaving class. He said the human players will often travel in groups when walking across campus and drop people off at different buildings.

All academic buildings, residence halls and dining halls were all off limits for the game so normal student life would not be disrupted, Weiser said.

Weiser said Humans vs. Zombies was created in 2005 by students at Goucher University in Maryland, and the game has been held in more than 70 colleges across the nation. A smaller version of the current Western round of the game was held in Nash Hall during winter quarter, which provided the model Weiser wanted to improve on, he said. To date, Weiser said the Nash Hall game was not associated with any official student groups.

However, several obstacles stood in the way of making HvZ a possibility for spring quarter.  Casey Hayden, Associated Students (AS) student activities adviser, said the group had to get an exterior use permit from Viking Union Facilities and refine the rules of the game by adding additional safety measures.

Weiser said in order to get permission to have the event outside, he had to make HvZ an Associated Student club. The group’s club status was approved in late April.

James Schuster, director of Viking Union Facilities, said the group had to become a club because individual students cannot reserve outside space. He said students have to be part of a larger organization, such as a club, an AS program or an activity approved by a professor.

Becoming a club is a straightforward process, Schuster said. He said all students need is the desire to form the club and five like-minded people to sign the paperwork. The potential club then presents to the activities council where questions are asked and their fate is decided, he said. Approved clubs receive $50 in startup funds, Schuster said.

Hayden said the primary concern of both the Viking Union administration and the University Police was to keep the students safe while playing, which is why the rules were changed so the game did not run 24 hours a day but stopped at 9 p.m. daily so the students were not running around the dark.

Schuster said his initial concerns centered on the fact that the game would be played with projectile weapons, involved students stalking each other in order to get tags, playing the game in the dark and having a clear end time so the game did not go on indefinitely.

Schuster said he discussed the game with university safety officials and met with Weiser and Hayden to get the rules of the game figured out. He said they implemented several rule changes, such as forbidding head shots with the Nerf blasters and other rules. He approved the game on May 21.

“We all felt confident that it was something that was controllable,” Schuster said.

Schuster said as of June 1 he had received no reports so far about problems with the game or student injuries.

The game concluded its current round Sunday night. The human players were sent on a mission to escort Weiser from south campus to Nash Hall, with the zombie players out in force to “infect” them. Weiser said the human players were successful, which he said was a disappointment to him because he was rooting for the zombies.

Weiser said he is already planning improvements for what he hopes will be two games next year, one in fall quarter and one in spring quarter. He said this round of HvZ has taught him a lot about what has been done right and what has been done wrong with designing the game.

Weiser said he hopes the game will become an accepted part of Western’s culture.

“I want the game to be enjoyable to all people,” he said. “I want it to be a Western game instead of a small group of people who happen to be on Western putting it on.”

Valve Announces Left 4 Dead 2

Valve Announces Left 4 Dead 2

JUNE 1, 2009, 12:05 PM - VALVE - PRESS RELEASE

Sequel to Best-Selling Co-op Thriller Coming This Holiday

June 1, 2009 - Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2), the sequel to the best-selling and critically-acclaimed co-operative multiplayer thriller.

Coming exclusively to Xbox 360 and PC, L4D2 promises to set a new benchmark for co-operative action games and become one of 2009's marquee titles.

"A large part of how Left 4 Dead became 2008's top-selling new IP on Xbox 360 and the PC was the custom-tailored gameplay made possible by the AI Director," said Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve. "With the knowledge gained from creating the original, new technology, and a passionate team, L4D2 will set a new benchmark for cooperative action games."

Set for release on November 17, the title adds melee combat to enable deeper co-operative gameplay, with items such as a chainsaw, frying pan, axe, baseball bat, and more.

Introducing the AI Director 2.0, L4D's dynamic gameplay is taken to the next level by giving the Director the ability to procedurally change weather effects, world objects, and pathways in addition to tailoring the enemy population, effects, and sounds to match the players' performance. The result is a unique game session custom fitted to provide a satisfying and uniquely challenging experience each time the game is played.

Featuring new Survivors, boss zombies, weapons, and items, Left 4 Dead 2 offers a much larger game than the original with more co-operative campaigns, more Versus campaigns, and maps for Survival mode available at launch.

Supported by a $10+ million marketing campaign, Left 4 Dead has sold over 2.5 million retail copies since it was released in November of 2008. Left 4 Dead 2 is targeted for release on Xbox 360 and the PC on November 17, 2009, and will be launched worldwide with a multi-million dollar marketing campaign across TV, Outdoor, and Online.

"Left 4 Dead was backed by our most aggressive advertising campaign to date, and resulted in a top 5 showing on two platforms during holiday 2008," said Doug Lombardi, VP of marketing at Valve. "Left 4 Dead 2 is a larger game and will be supported with even more consumer and retail advertising programs than the original."

Left 4 Dead 2 will be featured as the cover story on PC Gamer and Official Xbox Magazines this month.
